Even as I write this note I’m thinking - did I need to write this now? Should I be doing something else? It’s so easy - particularly as a busy litigation lawyer - to be pulled in to emails and the draw of keeping updated with internal and external news. The urge to reply and to be right there all the time with a client is powerful, but over time I have found more for myself and for my client by greeting a request with thanks and a plan for my reply. Obviously this doesn’t apply to urgent items, but even then, it can sometimes help a client to re-think the question of urgency. Taking time to reflect can often be the best first step.
